Here’s a sweet story from the ages, a bit of mythological twist to the delicious roshogulla.

Originally called ‘Khira Mohana’, the Rasgulla was claimed by both West Bengal and Odisha. But looks like legends favour Odisha. Story goes that Lord Jagannath didn’t take his consort, Lakshmi, for the Rath Yatra. Lakshmi was upset and to mollify her, Lord Jagannath offered her the Rasgulla. 

Even now, traditionally the rasgulla is offered to Goddess Lakshmi on the ninth day of Rath Yatra, to pacify her. Legend goes that only after she has consumed it can the the three deities (Jagannath, Balaram, and Subhadra) enter the temple.
